Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.
Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
This book was absolutely amazing! I have long since been a fan of Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, and this was a breathtaking jump back into her style. The characters connected with me in such a personal way that, I guess you could say that I was left ‘heartless’ when I closed the back cover. (*wink*) But honestly, if you are a fan of twisted fairytales, romance, and strong characters, this is the book for you!
There were many twists and turns throughout the novel, and I loved every minute of it. When I thought everything would go one way, the story would flip on its head and we would be heading in a totally different direction. It was a great reminder to what a good book should do.
However, the one problem I had with the novel was that it felt like she was building up to a series, and when that didn’t happen, it really threw me for a loop. The ending was amazing, don’t get me wrong, I just wished – from a reader’s standpoint – it had become something grander.
Other than that, I’ll sing high praises from the rooftops for this book. Definitely a must read.
